Dogs are absolute wonderful additions to a family.  They can offer companionship, be guardians for your home, and accompany you on adventures on trails and in the car.  They make great snuggle buddies and dogs have a way of knowing how to just be there for you during all circumstances.  All of those reasons and more are reasons why many people consider the idea of getting a dog.

There are situations that people do not often consider though when thinking of taking that next step.  Things like veterinary bills which can be for regular check ups and vaccinations, or even for sickness or injury.  It is also important to consider things like having to be available for house training.  Along with house training comes accidents that will have to be cleaned.  Chewing is another reality too.  You can lose shoes, pillows, even furniture and the drywall can get demolished.  These things are the realities of owning a dog.  All dogs are different, but you should always be ready for the possibility of these things occurring.

Dogs are big responsibilities and while there are so many wonderful joys you will get from having a dog, be aware that a dog is a commitment.  If it is not possible for you to meet the needs and things for your pup, then you will both not be satisfied.  Think it through before making an impulsive decision to get a dog.  You will be better off taking a while to really think it over.  Consider the below list of all that your dog will need, and hopefully that will give you some things to mull over before jumping into such a big responsibility.

FOOD AND WATER – Your pup will need food and water.  Along with the food, you will want to have healthy treats on hand for training purposes and rewards.  Keep in mind too that sometimes dogs might actually require a special diet due to allergies, weight, age, and other factors.  That can cost even more than regular dog food.

OUTDOOR SHELTER – If you are choosing to keep your dog outdoors, then you will need to make sure that it is a type of dog that can live in outdoor elements.  Some breeds, like pugs for instance, are not able to withstand the heat or cold.  Outdoor dogs will need shelter from the elements, and it is also a good idea to have a fenced in area to protect the dog.  Outdoor dogs will also need to be kept from hazardous plants, and you might find that they bark more often than others.

INSIDE CRATES – Inside dogs will need a crate or area where you can keep them away from your belongings while you are not home.  A dog that is not crated may get bored when you are not around, and that is when destruction can happen.  Dog beds, gates, and carpet cleaners are also helpful too.

EXERCISE – Just like humans, dogs need plenty of exercise too.  Some breeds require much more than others, so be aware of your breed’s needs.  Plenty of outdoor space, toys, and a leash are important things to have.

MORE – On top of the above, dogs will also require health care, some might require certain grooming needs, play toys, companionship, your forgiveness and love.  So, please think before going out on a whim to get a dog.
